Elderberry for immunity

Elderberry

Elderberries and their flower are packed with antioxidants, in fact, in folk medicine Elderberry is considered to be the most healing of all plants. Though there are over 30 types of elderflower, the Sambucus Nigra variation found in Europe is most closely tied to healing and boosting the immune system.

Reducing inflammation and alleviating stress are two of Elderberry and Elderflower’s more popular qualities and has also been used as treatment for a number of ailments including respiratory infections. As we all know by now, Covid 19 affects the upper respiratory tract and can exacerbate existing respiratory conditions, resulting in some case in Pneumonia. Therefore, protection of this system is crucial to protect us at this time

Introducing Elderberry into our diet may have some immunity boosting effects and can be found in supplement form and can be difficult to ingest it in its natural form as processed forms of Elderberry are found more widely in the food industry.

Elderberry

As with all new supplemental additions to your diet, check with a health professional before taking Elderberry in large doses. It can have a diuretic effect so drink plenty of water with it and avoid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Elderberries are also high in Vitamin C, which as we have already established, has been widely used to treat the common cold by supporting cellular functions of the immune system, directing immune cells to the site of infection and defending these cells from free radicals.

Extracts of black elderberries have been used in studies to confirm the positive effects it can have on the severity and length of influenza. Subjects found a significant improvement in symptoms, after just 2-4 days, whilst those without Elderberry took between 7-8 days to see any improvement at all.

The Elderberry is packed with antioxidants, in fact, the anthocyanins and flavonoids in Elderberries have 3.5 times the amount of antioxidant power of Vitamin E, and we know these to be hugely beneficial to us and that they help prevent chronic disease.

One particular study showed that Elderberry polyphenols produced more white blood cells, which in turn supported the immune system offering it more stability.

What snacks can I eat whilst dieting during the Superbowl?

Snacks while dieting during the Superbowl

Its Superbowl weekend! Congratulations to the Chiefs and the 49ers! Its been a tough season! But whilst team selections are important, the bigger question is whether or not you can eat snacks while dieting. Come on, it’s the Superbowl… you deserve a break from your healthy dieting.

But the fight won’t only be on the gridiron in Miami. Households across the globe will face their own struggles! Read below on our thoughts on what can be consumed as snacks while dieting throughout the Superbowl.

Snacks while Dieting?

As the calendar turns over to February the “new year new me” tribe are in full swing. The first gym payment is due soon, and you are loving your 25th meat and broccoli meal of the year…………

But the Superbowl is here……………

Full slabs of Ribs

Unlimited Wings

Nachos and Dip

Pitchers of Beer

Resisting Temptation

The temptation is thrust into your lap. The little potbellied devil is on your shoulder telling you “Come on, it’s the Superbowl”

But there is help to hand. Google has a long list of healthy snacks you can make “quick and simple” to enjoy while watching the game.

Now I need to practice what I preach. Can I promise that I won’t be wiping buffalo sauce off my chin by the time the 2nd quarter starts? No, I can not. But can I say to myself “I’ve worked hard for this?” Yes, I most definitely can.

Your inner voice will tell you. The guilt is real, but only guilty people have done something wrong. Remember, your mental health is also important in this and you shouldn’t cut yourself off from eating. But food intolerances can cause depression. If you are feeling a bit rubbish after tucking into some healthy snacks and healthy extras, then it could actually be a food intolerance. There are plenty of healthy recipes to consider as well.

Remember, mind body and soul……………… In that Order………………. Go 9ers!

Fad Diets – why the negativity?

Atkins Diet, Paleo Diet, Keto Diet……………….

Diets can come in many forms and guises. From low carb diets to fat burners, people can become exasperated with the choices on offer. Before and after shots of peoples weight losses holding newspapers to confirm dates, are littered next to people’s stories of “failing” to maintain the diet plan. The wagon has had so many people fall off, someone should question when the MOT is due, surely?!

Diets are Unique

Diets are not a one size fits all, they are there to educate, improve and support you in your everyday lifestyle.

The issue with the “fad diet” is they are designed for maximum results over a short period of time. Stories of 10lb weight loss in a week are not conducive with a healthy lifestyle. Finding your body’s, and as importantly, your mind’s balance is the key to a long-lasting weight management programme.

The next time you research the next fashionable weight loss programme ask yourself these questions;

  • Can I maintain this for 6 months?
  • What are my aims?
  • Do I feel supported?

Don’t pressure yourself. Remember diet doesn’t have to mean weight loss, it can mean healthy lifestyle.

Mind Body and Soul………………….In that order ????
